Slowly applying colours on the piece.  It is an ongoing struggle for me - how much of the surface I want to expose, or cover?

The Wave has been transformed since the last post.  My friend suggested a frame was necessary and the shape got changed in the midst of doing the frame.  For me, creating a sculpture  is all about materials and process, and problem solving.  After researching on different materials (resin, epoxy, fibreglass bandage, linen, raw canvas),  I went back to wax and burlap.

2014 Pouch Cove Heritage Days (September 26, 27 & 28)

Got the Town's permission to paint the concrete barriers as an activity involving kids and youth during our Heritage Days festival.

It was scheduled for Saturday morning and was postponed to Sunday due to weather.  It was wonderful.  We had kids, parents, artists all worked together and turned the grey concrete barriers to some delightful art pieces.

"Homage to Ted's Fish" won an Award for Personal Expression in the Craft Council's Annual Members Exhibit.
I definitely want to get back to create a full size flake....

wave sculptures revisited ...

To re-present the natural shapes and motions of waves on a two dimensional surface with encaustic medium has been the focus of my work in the past few years.  Now I have the opportunity to re-create the waves' raw power in a three dimensional form.  Incorporating the audio component into the sculpture work will present another experience to the overall installation.

Newfoundland Arts Council has approved my proposal to create a large size "wave" encaustic sculpture and a 10 minutes video work using interviews and archival images.  I hope to create a good (professional) quality video piece which I can use for future submission.  Ken Pittman will be my mentor for the video work.  "Power of the Edge" is the working title for this proposed work.

living sculptures....

We are going to see lots of icebergs this year.  There are a few of them around here.  They are close to shore you can see every vein and try to imagine how the waves carve them out.

The book Pouch Cove - Our Home by the Sea is finished.  We are getting ready for the book launch this coming Sunday.  We have very positive feedback with the book.  I am so glad I was involved in this project.   It was great working with Roy, Garry, Vicki and Dan.  I still would like to put together a smaller booklet with an audio component in it.  My next project???

Spent most of the time on the book project "Pouch Cove, Our Home by the Sea" and the 100th anniversary of the SS Newfoundland Disaster.  Learnt a lot about the seal fishery, and also the movie, The Viking.  The film was made in 1929/30 by Varick Frissell.  The outtakes of the film were shot in Pouch Cove.  Got hold of a copy from a film distributor in the States.  Here are some stills from the outtakes.

Sealing stoires

This year is the 100 anniversary of the SS Newfoundland sealing disasters.  Ten Pouch Cove men "went to the ice" aboard the SS Newfoundland and five of them perished.  Three Jordans were amongst the deaths.  Angela Wall remembers her Uncle Steve (one of the survivors) was deeply affected by the incident because he was the one that told his brother and nephews not to go ....  I am making a video and am hoping to share that during the commemoration in March.

I have been working on the interviews and trying to do some rough editing for now.  There are numerous projects I would like to do, they are:

  • If a Fish Flake Could Talk
  • The Legacy of H.S. (through the research done on SUF, and Henry Sullivan's grand son's own search of his family to tell the life of H.S. if he were alive to live the life in Pouch Cove.)
  • Biscayne Cove Stories
Here is a draft copy of 'If a Fish Flake Could Talk'
